Harpal Baines

Founder, Managing Director

Harpal Baines

Harpal has been around Adult social care as long as he can remember. Growing up in a household where Mum was the Registered Manager for 30+ years across a number of settings. Harpal was always around the action and took a keen interest in the variety of activity & commitment required to deliver Quality Care.

Following his time studying Chemistry at University of Birmingham, where Harpal won a national championship as starting offensive lineman for Birmingham Lions American football team, Harpal worked as a community care worker, domiciliary coordinator & service Manager. Completing his Level 5 in Care leadership & management and Black Country Partnership ‘Lead to inspire’ care leadership programme, Harpal worked as part of a team to grow his family run domiciliary care setup, into an established, Management run service with a workforce of over 200 dedicated staff, supporting over 500 care recipients in their own homes.

Harpal has been involved in numerous projects across a variety of settings, always keen to support colleagues in the challenging but rewarding care sector. As part of his journey in operating care services Harpal came to truly appreciate the value of an effective training provider and their influence on quality outcomes for people in their care.

Sapphire Education & Training is founded on first hand experience and on the basis that the right training provider can really play an effective role in supporting the success of care settings.

Amarjit Jassal

Business Development Manager

Amarjit Jassal

Amo is the Business Development Manager for Sapphire Education and has worked within Apprenticeship Provision for over 10 years. Amo has managed to gain a vast amount of experience and knowledge by working at various Training Providers across the West Midlands, who have specialized in Accounts, IT, Digital Marketing, Engineering, Health & Social Care, Early Years, Business Admin, Customer Service, and various other courses.

As a Business Development Manager, Amo has worked closely with SME and BlueChip companies in identifying their recruitment, training needs, and supporting the hiring/training managers in meeting their required outcome.

When Amo isn’t looking at new client opportunities, you will see him in the gym 6 days a week at the ‘crack of dawn’ or spending time with his family on weekends. One of his favourite pastimes is watching his favourite football team Liverpool FC with his 2 children.

Lee Wilson

Health & Social Care Tutor

Lee Wilson

Lee began his career in care at Diamond Home Care in 2011 where he supported individuals with mental and physical health issues in the community. During this time Lee developed a greater awareness of clients’ individual needs and the diversity within communities both of which he used to deliver true person-centered care whilst using the company’s values to respect, give choice and support individuals to be independent. After a year of working in the company Lee progressed into a more senior role and completed his level two in health and social care. He continued to progress through the company and achieved his level 5 Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care. Today Lee uses his passion and true understanding of the health and social care sector to train, develop and coach staff new to care and those looking to refresh their knowledge or upskill.

Jackie Adey

Quality Manager

Jackie Adey

Jackie started off her career as a nursery nurse in a small children’s day nursery and within 3 years was prompted to a nursery manager, it was then that she decided she wanted to make a difference to the next generation of nursery practitioners, looking after children and young people and decided to move into teaching and delivery of apprenticeships, starting off training staff within her own nursery, before moving onto a training provider to deliver on a larger scale.

For the past 12 years, Jackie has worked in a number of training roles from Assessor to IQA for Early years and residential qualifications and is also an End Point Assessor.

Elle McNulty

Funding Compliance Coordinator

Elle McNulty

After years of working in retail, Elle changed her career and gained employment as a Business Administrator apprentice at a small training provider company.

After gaining her qualification, Elle was promoted to M.I.S Co-ordinator and Lead Administrator for a team of three apprentices.

Elle is now the Data & Funding Compliance Co-ordinator at Sapphire and processes all learner details, compliance checks, and all ILR submissions, liaising with employers regarding their learners’ funding and handling all data filing systems.

Outside of work, Elle spends her time with her family, friends, and her puppy, Woody. Elle also loves to travel and visit new cities as often as she can.

Emma Duffell

Teaching & Development Coach

Emma Duffell

At the age of 16, Emma left school to work in the care sector as a YTS student. In 1990, she gained her City N Guilds Qualification in Care. Emma was then placed in different placements but mostly enjoyed working with the elderly in a nursing home environment.

When Emma passed her driving test, she moved further field and started working at Prestwood Nursing Home. In 1999, she gained her NVQ2 Qualification, followed by Level 3 in 2009.

Over the years, Emma had undertaken various roles in Care, including Care Co-ordinator for Alternative Care, Domiciliary Care Manager at B S Home Care in Walsall, a Warden for a sheltered housing scheme, an Activities Co-ordinator at Woodford Nursing Home, a Care Lead in the reminiscence unit for Dementia care at Sunrise Senior Living, and a Care Co-ordinator and Carer at Academy Home Care.

Eventually, Emma decided it was time for a career change and went to work at Penn Fields Medical Centre where she stayed for 5 years.

However, Emma then began to realise that her passion for care never faded, and went back to working in the sector, this time – as a Care Coordinator at Beacon Centre for the Blind. Two years later, she moved on to carrying out staff inductions and care assessments at Home Instead and finally settled here at Sapphire Education & Training where she’s working as a Teaching & Development Coach.

Katrina Smith

Operations Manager (Apprenticeships)

Katrina Smith

Katrina has worked in early years and teaching positions for over 28 years spending over 10
years with local authorities supporting the early years and schools provision. She has
worked in a variety of different roles across both voluntary, charity and mainstream
provision. Katrina’s jobs have included Health support worker, Early year’s consultant,
learning link worker, nursery practitioner, teenage pregnancy consultant, PRU support
officer and finally becoming a tutor/ assessor. Katrina has been an assessor and an IV for
over 10 years now across two further educational Colleges and two training providers. In
her spare time, she enjoys spending time with Family, exploring, and reading with her
granddaughter and exploring new places and fine dining experiences.

Lead Internal Quality Assurer (IQA)

Debbie swift

During a career that has spanned over 30 years Debbie has worked in various types of care settings  from the NHS, nursing homes, learning disability and community care. Her roles have ranged from a care assistant, senior carer to training coordinator. The past 10 years, Debbie  has worked in a number of training roles from Assessor to Acting Lead IQA Tutor for Health and Social Care qualifications. She  has also delivered training  on many courses including  First Aid, manual handling and all mandatory training required in the care sector.  

To maintain her competency, Debbie supports a close friend who has cerebral palsy with daily living activities and  volunteered during the pandemic at a local home care agency to support the service due to the number of staff unable to work. Debbie’s passion is that care is delivered to a high standard and recognises the importance of supporting and working closely with  local businesses to access the opportunities available  to develop their team.

Donna Flavell

Teaching & Development Coach

Donna Flavell

Donna’s journey in the care sector began 17 years ago when she started her first job in the orthopaedic trauma unit at Russell’s Hall Hospital in Dudley at 17 years old. 4 years later, she began expanding her working experience by picking up shifts in other units within the hospital, including surgical, medical, and, most notably, critical care.

Donna then moved on to working within the Residential Care sector by taking on a job in a nursing home for people with Dementia, later settling into an End-of-life Care role to which she dedicated 8 years of her life.

Prior to joining the team at Sapphire, Donna had gained her assessor’s qualification and subsequently began working for a major college. Upon gaining her IQA Award she was soon promoted to a supervisory position while still managing a caseload of learners. The role was rather challenging as Donna was supporting 3 teams of staff simultaneously alongside of conducting regular appraisals and carrying out numerous other responsibilities.

Amanda Mitchell

Trainee Teaching & Development Coach

During a career that has spanned over 27 years, Amanda has worked in various childcare and educational settings from day nurseries to NHS and primary schools. Her roles have ranged from a Teaching Assistant to, Higher Level Teaching Assistant to a Deputy Manager.

Amanda’s passion has always been to support others with their own career progression. She has mentored college students and apprentices within her previous workplaces. Amanda is now working at Sapphire Training, where she is being supported to bring her dream job to life; training to be a Development Coach.

Asha Rukar

Teaching & Learning Expert

Asha Rukar

Asha has been in teaching for 13 years, predominantly with the focus on secondary education and in particular Key Stage 5 teaching and learning.  She has a background in Psychology (BSc), graduating from the University of Leicester in 2007. She completed her QTS training in Bedfordshire before relocating to the West Midlands in 2012. 

Asha is currently Head of Psychology at an academy in West Bromwich, where previously (prior to maternity) she held the role of Assistant Head of Sixth Form and Head of Sociology & Psychology, launching and developing the Sociology curriculum at Key Stage 4.  Her role within post 16 focussed on developing successful higher education admissions, liaisons with universities and other external agencies and helping to reduce the overall number of NEETs from the academy. 

As well as this, Asha has worked with the University of Wolverhampton and Worcester University to help mentor PGCE trainees launch their career into teaching.

Asha is our teaching and learning expert, providing advice and guidance on the teaching element of our programs and ensuring they are meeting Ofsted guidelines.

Claire Fitzgerald

Safeguarding Expert

Claire Fitzgerald

Claire has delivered early years care in a number of roles, gaining valuable experience as a nursery practitioner. Claire was swiftly promoted to deputy nursery manager in early 2008. Later that year, Claire set up her own childminding business, which she has ran successfully since 2008.

To further develop her understanding of the theory of childcare and education, Claire then undertook a teacher training course. During the full-time, heavily placement-based course, Claire spent much of her time helping children with special educational needs, giving her a deep understanding of the safeguarding requirements of vulnerable children.

Claire then became a training officer at an ‘Outstanding’ rated training provider and has since worked in other training officer roles helping to provide apprenticeships for teaching assistants, continuing with her passion of helping those with special educational needs.

Claire is our safeguarding expert, writing our safeguarding courses, and also delivering them to practitioners on a freelance basis. Claire’s vast experience of working in the early years and training sector, in a variety of roles, gives her the expertise and understanding of the sector’s challenges.
