Diabetes is a serious condition where blood glucose level is too high. It can happen when your body does not produce enough insulin, or when you can’t produce any at all. Diabetes requires strict monitoring and management which is usually done by the individual however it’s essential that those who spend time around them know how to help if ever needed.

This course provides you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to provide that help if needed.

Aims of the Course

By the end of the course learners will:

  • Understand the different types of diabetes, how they are caused, and their common symptoms

  • Have knowledge of the long-term complications of diabetes and how to prevent them

  • Understand the short-term risks of diabetes and how to prevent and treat them

  • Be able to recommend targets for blood glucose levels and blood pressure

  • Understand the importance of blood glucose monitoring

  • Be able to discuss various forms of treatment for diabetes, including insulin, medication, diet, and exercise

  • Be able to recommend how to manage diet by counting carbohydrates and referring to foods' glycaemic index (GI)

  • Describe how diabetes impacts on a person's day-to-day life
